THURSDAY 25 OCTOBER - PETER ABBOTT
Anderlecht and Standard Liege want reform now particularly to reinforce their sponsorship contracts, however KAA Gent, Germinal Beerschot, Sporting Charleroi and Mouscron are opposed to the current proposals and would rather see a championship of 16 teams (currently 18) with play-offs at the end of the season. There needs to be a two-thirds majority to modify the structure of the championship.
FRIDAY 19 OCTOBER - PETER ABBOTT
Some Belgian News....Lierse: President Léo Theyskens has asked the Board of Directors of the club to resign in order to allow potential new Egyptian investors to take over the club. Other local businessmen are being encouraged to work with the Egyptians and one of those interested has suggested that there will be an investment of about seven million euros coming from Egypt. Winter break: The Presidents of Div 1 clubs have agreed the cancellation of the traditional winter break in Belgium and play across Xmas and the New Year from next season as is already the case here in the UK and in the Netherlands. The championship would therefore start later, particularly as next August 2008 Belgium have qualified for the Olympic Games in Beijing. New format competition for Div 1: Those same Presidents of Div 1 clubs have also agreed to review the Wijnants Plan as follows:- 1st half of the season League A - 12 clubs (22 matches) League B - 12 clubs (22 matches) 2nd half of the season Superleague - top 8 from League A play-off for the title and European competition for the following season. League 1- bottom 4 from League A plus top 4 from League B will play to stay in, or get promoted to, League A for the following season. League 2- bottom 8 from League A will play to stay in League B with the bottom 3 relegated to Div 2. Watch this space

WEDNESDAY 10 OCTOBER - CHRIS ASHBRIDGE
I was passing through Calais (on my way to a French Cup tie) last Sunday and picked up a free newspaper published by the local council, in a newsagent. It had a big story about a new stadium ("Stade de l'Epopee" which I think translates as 'Epic Stadium') being built, which will have an initial capacity of 12,000 but with the potential to expand to 18,000. The article was accompanied by several pictures, most of them computer-generated, but there was also a real photo showing an construction work at an early stage. So if you haven't yet been to CRUFC's current ground (Stade Julien Denis) it might be a good idea to go there before the end of the current season. They have a home midweek game on Tues 16th October, plus a few Friday night games.

MONDAY 1 OCTOBER - PETER ABBOTT
Latest Belgian news...At the clubs behest and due to the "chaos" existing with clubs having" already played" games "all over" the fixture list, it was decided on Saturday that the Belgian League Div 2 would not use the "period" system for this season and that, subject to having the necessary licence, clubs finishing in positions 2 to 5 would automatically qualify for the promotion Div 2 play-offs, rather than in the past, when up to 3 of the play-offs spots went to "period" champions.
